VQ 3: Embrace your favorite instrument

If music is important, the vessel through which music comes into your life is even MORE important.

It has always been this way, but some of us haven’t noticed just how significant one particular instrument is— until we take the time to identify and honor that instrument.

And while all instruments are important in adding the sounds and silences that make up music — not all instruments are significant to us.

That’s why I created this episode… where we’ll talk about our favorite instrument and why that happens to be our favorite instrument.

Today's Guest

Haydee [00:00:29]:

Well, hello there! Welcome to another episode of Voluptuous Questions. My name is Haydee, and my guest today is YOU. In the last episode, we talked about what our favorite musical moment was and today, I wanted to ask you: What is YOUR favorite instrument and what does that instrument represent to YOU? Most likely the answer is super obvious. You know what you’d like, and you already blurted out the name of the instrument. Now all you have to do is think about what that instrument represents to YOU. However, it’s possible that you may THINK that you either like ALL instruments or that you don’t have a preference. But let me challenge you on that.

Haydee [00:01:16]:

Think of one of your favorite songs. Think of your favorite PART of the song. What instrument is playing? Said another way, If you had to go on a 2-hour concert and listen to one instrument, which instrument would it have to be to make you say I’m happy to be there. Imagine if that concert is several times a week. What instrument would you tolerate that much? For me, answering both parts of this question is SUPER simple. My favorite instrument is the saxophone. I could just drop the mic right here and say I’m done. Do I really need to say more? Do I really need to explain myself as to why this is not only MY favorite instrument, but it should be EVERYBODY’S favorite instrument?

Haydee [00:02:07]:

I don’t think I have to explain myself, but I will, if I have to. Look, the saxophone has the power to take love transform it into passion and transform the passion back to love. It’s a SEDUCTIVE dance between romance and passion, highs and lows, dancing rhythmically or gently swaying and LOVE is ALWAYS the common denominator. It NEVER leaves the equation. Personally, I like the slower sexy tones of a tenor saxophone. It’s much more passionate. You may not know this, but the saxophone is one of the youngest popular instruments in the world. So it’s not surprising that it feels young and fresh in its energy.

Haydee [00:03:00]:

And most importantly, it feels like a rebel, like it’s in its own category. If I was an instrument, I would be the sax. It would take someone VERY special to hold me and know which buttons to press to create MAGIC. I love a sax player who can replicate a song in a very precise way. There are many sax players who can vaguely make their version sound like the original, BUT I prefer a sax player who is able to replicate the notes SO WELL that the lyrics you’re singing out loud or in your head are exactly as they SHOULD be, and there’s no distraction. It’s simply PURE bliss. Sax players don’t have to be perfect. but they’re the BEST when they surrender to the power of the song and play from the depths of their soul.

Haydee [00:03:55]:

It’s not just about technique. It’s about precise and honest interpretation. One of my FAVORITE things to receive in life are song dedications. There is hardly ANYTHING more romantic than that, in my opinion. So if you’re able to find a sax player, who can transform one of your favorite songs into a sax version, PLEASE ask them to do it. But let me warn you, you’ll probably melt. If you’ve NEVER heard of lo-fi songs played in a sax, please do yourself a favor and listen to those. Most importantly, regardless of what your favorite instrument is, create a playlist on your Spotify or favorite music platform with your favorite songs from that instrument.

Haydee [00:04:46]:

It’ll be a perfect playlist to listen to when you’re driving, need to concentrate, take a bath, or feel like listening to that particular instrument at any particular moment.
