VQ 11: The Profound Way Music Touches You

There are fewer forces as powerful as music. Music touches us individually. Collectively and for most of our life. There are songs that remind us of people. Some remind us of their absense. Others remind us of the love we have for them. We all have memories that we associate with a certain song. Music runs through our souls constantly. It’s about time that we honor its positive impact.

Haydee [00:00:30]:

Hello there! Welcome to this episode of Voluptuous Questions! My name is Haydee, and you, my dear, are my guest. Ready for today’s question? If you had to summarize what type of music you like in 1 sentence, what would you say? Music has been VERY important for me ALL my life, but it wasn’t until a couple of weeks before recording this podcast, when I had an aha moment and I realized that if I HAD to summarize what type of music I like in 1 sentence, I would say: I LOVE music that TRULY moves my body and that TRULY moves my soul. What do I mean by this? To me, music that moves my body is OBVIOUSLY music that makes me dance. I am SO easily moved by music that I often don’t understand how people can remain frozen when there is a yummy or upbeat song playing in the background. For me, it’s harder NOT to move than to move. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I often wonder if people who don’t dance in these situations really don’t FEEL the music or if they’re just pretending not to feel it. I definitely do understand that there are people who are embarrassed about dancing in public.

Haydee [00:02:07]:

I get it. But what worries me the most is that I KNOW that there are people who NEVER dance even when they’re home alone. They don’t even start to dance in front of people they trust, like their family or friends. BUT if you go up to them and hold on to their hands, neck, or waist while you dance, they show that they DO have the ability to dance and can dance with you. My theory is that ALL babies, which means each and every one of us, are born with the potential to dance, but somewhere along the way, someone influences them so that they stop dancing. Most of the time, the feeling associated with dancing in front of others is shame for some strange reason, And that leads to embarrassment being the number one cause as to why people don’t dance. Thankfully, there hasn’t been ANYBODY in my life that has been able to keep ME from dancing, and there will never be.

Haydee [00:03:15]:

Because I will ALWAYS dance whether I’m standing, sitting, or now that I’m young, or when I’m 90 years old. Nothing can stand in the way of me dancing because I see dancing as 2 important things. Number 1: Dancing to me is FULLY being open and allowing music to penetrate our soul so that we can feel it fully. The second thing dancing is to me is a visual example of our appreciation for music. It’s like an applause or a thank you to the people who created music, sung the song, or are performing covers of a song. I do understand that there are some songs that lend themselves to dancing more than others and that there are songs that are better for listening. But I stand my ground. If you’re listening to a song that you CAN dance to and that’s actually inviting you to dance to it, and you’re sitting or standing there like a bump on a log, then it’s sort of like an insult.

Haydee [00:04:23]:

I’m kidding. Actually, not really. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Come on! Stand up and DANCE. Shake it! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ•บ There’s nothing wrong with doing that. What’s wrong with you ๐Ÿคฃ for thinking that there’s something bad about dancing? Come on. You have NOTHING to lose.

Haydee [00:04:44]:

And I’m not the only one to encourage you to dance. I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying that says, “Dance like nobody’s watching.” So what are you waiting for? Being the romantic that I am, I LOVE music that moves my soul because oftentimes, It’s not the rhythm itself that moves you, but rather the emotion, the lyrics, or a calm or touching melody. I don’t mind if music makes me cry or at least causes me to have a lump in my throat. As a matter of fact, I prefer music that does make me shed some tears or be on the verge of tearing up. Those songs usually become some of my favorites. Even if I don’t have any physical sensations, sometimes simply listening to music that moves my soul is VERY cathartic. In sum, I don’t like music to waste my time.

Haydee [00:05:48]:

I NEED to either be inspired to dance OR I NEED to feel the passion of a song, the hurt, the joy, the gratitude, the hope. I need to FEEL something. I think it’s when we experience the intense emotions of songs that we can either become happier, focus on something more positive, reminisce about our past, feel the pain of the song, and channel our pain along with it. It can give us permission to FEEL something when we’re distracted, busy, or numb. And ultimately, music is SUPER healing. I think that the main reason why music is healing is because It LITERALLY gives a voice, the precise words, and a soundtrack to the things going on in our lives, in our mind, and in our heart that we need to process. Let me tell you more about what music means to me. Music is my saving grace.

Haydee [00:06:56]:

Without it, I don’t even want to THINK of where I would be. I’m getting emotional just thinking about this. ๐Ÿฅน When I feel like nobody understands me, music does. When I feel alone, Music is here. Music has been one of the most constant, reliable, and safe things in my life. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Life without music wouldn’t be worth it to me. As long as there is music, there can be life.

Haydee [00:07:29]:

Music is my religion ๐Ÿ™Œ. Music is an endless array of beautiful things wrapped up into 1. Music is my prayer. Music is meditation. Music is silence because music is in large part the result of silence between the notes. Music is manifestation. Music is art. Music is THE universal language.

Haydee [00:07:56]:

Music is the heartbeat of humanity.๐Ÿ’— ๐ŸŒŽ ๐ŸŒ It’s not a coincidence that our hearts beat and that music has beats as well ๐ŸŽถ.
